Guest Speaker: Cheryl Coon

Special Presentation by: Carus Elementary School

Cheryl Coon Biography

Photo of Cheryl Coon    Cheryl Coon has volunteered in public schools since 1991, working with both gifted and learning-disabled children . Her work with individual children led her to the realization that children’s books can be immensely helpful to children struggling with both common and more challenging issues. In 1998, she began a project to research children’s literature and compile a comprehensive list of books organized by topic. Aided by school and public librarians and teachers, Cheryl’s work resulted in Books to Grow With: A Guide to Using the Best Children’s Fiction for Everyday Issues and Tough Challenges. Lutra Press, 2004. 336 pages; $17.95. ISBN 09748025-7-3.

Cheryl presents workshops throughout the Northwest on the use of books to help children and also writes for national media on the subject. She has lectured with Peggy Sharp (What’s New in Children’s Literature Institute) in both Oregon and Washington, spoken at the annual meetings of the Oregon Association for the Education of Young Children and the Oregon Educational Media Association, and at public libraries, schools, preschools and bookstores, and on television and radio. She will speak in 2005 at the Oregon Reading Association Annual Conference, the Oregon School Counselor Annual Conference and the annual conference of the International Reading Association.

Cheryl currently is working on the next book in the Books to Grow With series, which will focus on best books for everyday issues and tough challenges for middle-schoolers.

Cheryl lives in Portland, Oregon with her husband and two children.

Spring Fling 2004

Willamette Valley County Club hosted the Spring Fling 2004 on on April 29, 2004.  Dave Frohnmayer, President of the University of Oregon, was our guest of the evening.  Dave spoke on many issues relating to education not only in Canby, but also in Oregon, and the challenges we are faced with as a community to ensure that our children are getting the best possible public education.

Other special guests this evening were Leah Chelius (speech pathologist teacher at Trost), Brian Huggins (4th grade teacher at Trost ), Tammy Myers (sheltered Kindergarten teacher at Trost) and Angie Navarro (Head ELL teacher at Trost) who all spoke on various programs Canby Educational Foundation has financially assisted with at Trost Elementary School. We were also treated to a very special performance by some students at Trost who sang a lovely song and spoke on behalf of some of these programs.

Canby Ed Foundation also honored our donors for the past year.   Special mention went out to Canby Telephone for being the sponsor of the Spring Fling for the 4th year in a row.  The Foundation also thanked Bev Doolittle of the Canby Chamber of Commerce for her continued assistance in support of Canby Ed Foundation.
