Board Biographies

Rex Hagans, Board Chair

Rex is married to a terrific partner, Elizabeth, with whom he shares 7 children, 13 granchildren and 2 great-granchildren. He holds a BA in Political Science and a PhD in School Administration from the University of Iowa, and an MA in Counseling from the University of Oregon. Rex is a retired educator, having been a Teacher, School Principal, Assistant Superintendent and an Educational Researcher. He currently is an active volunteer with Stand for Children, Vice Chair of Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon Public Policy Committee and Vice Chair of the Clackamas County Comission on Children and Families. Rex also operates his 28 acre hazelnut farm near Beavercreek, and tries to keep up with the main activities of his grandchildren.

Roger Reif, Board Secretary

Roger was born and raised in the Canby community. After graduation from CHS he attended Willamette University and graduated with a BA in 1970. After military duty he returned to college and obtained his JD from Willamette Law. Roger returned to Canby to practice law and is a member of the Canby Chamber of Commerce, Canby Rotary, and serves on the non-profit board of directors of Willamette Falls Hospice and the Canby Center.

Charlie Stinson, Board Treasurer

Charlie received a BS in Applied Mathematics at the University of Colorado. He is a 30-year employee of NW Natural currently Managing Director of Project Development, and is a registered Petroleum Engineer in Oregon. Charlie has served in previous positions in engineering, exploration, production, underground storage, and the management of large projects. He is the Project Sponsor of the South Mist Pipeline Extension (61 miles of 24” transmission pipeline west of Portland). Charlie is a current member and past president of Canby Rotary and past member of the Canby School Board for twelve years. Charlie and his wife of 34 years, Denise, have two grown children and one granddaughter. He loves to ski, fish, and ride his bicycle and completed four Cycle Oregons and in 2008 completed a cross country bike tour-one week at a time.

Sandra Field, Board Chair-Elect

Sandra joined the board in 2010. She is a native Oregonian and has resided in Canby with her husband, Gary, since 1999. Sandra has been active in the Canby community having served two terms on the City budget committee. Her professional career spans 25 years of Banking in Oregon with a focus on Mortgage Lending, Compliance and Operations. She is currently a vice president and compliance officer with Umpqua Bank. Sandra and Gary have two grown and four cherished grandchildren which include a set of twins.

Tiffanie Clifford, Board Member

Tiffanie is a native Oregonian and is currently the HR Manager for Clackamas Community College (CCC). She holds a BS in Public Administration from WOU and an MBA from Marylhurst University. She is also part-time faculty for CCC and has guest lectured for Linfield College and is a Marylhurst Mentor. Tiffanie, her husband Joseph, and their two boxers, Duke & Lady, reside here in Canby.

Laurel Field, Board Member

Laurel has lived in Canby since 1990 where she and her husband of 24 years, Brian, formed a small agricultural investment banking company and raised their 3 girls. They live on a small farm where they raise market lambs and St. Croix Hair sheep. Originally from Golden, Colorado, Laurie graduated with her BS in Animal Science from Colorado State University in 1984. An active member in her community, Laurie attends Canby Christian Church and has volunteered in many areas including her church, 91 School, 91 PTA (serving as president from 2003-2005), 4-H, FFA alumni, and the CHS Scholarship Program.

Gay Kuykendall, Board Member

Gay has been a resident of Canby since 1968. She taught high school in neighboring communities and substituted at Canby High School for over 20 years. Gay was active with Oregon Schools Activities Association and the Dance-Drill Coaches Association as a coach, judge, and judges’ director of dance and drill for 15 years. She has also volunteered much of her time with local Canby activities and has worked with the Canby School District and community to help pass four school bonds since 1988. Gay and her husband, Gary, have one grown child and two grandchildren.

Carol Meeuwsen, Board Member

Carol grew up in rural New Era and is a lifelong Canby area resident. She and her husband Dan have two married daughters and six grandchildren. She has been a member of several non-profit boards including the Clackamas County Arts Action Alliance, OCTS Channel 5, Oregon Community Education Association, Canby Planning Commission, Canby Urban Renewal Development Task Force, Canby Library Board and CSD bond and boundary processes. Carol worked for The Canby Herald as a graphic designer and advertising manager and was then hired by Canby School District as its community education coordinator of programs in 1989. She retired from the district in 2011 after 10 years in information services, communications and special projects.

Tom Nolan, Board Member

Tom graduated from Portland State University in 1968. He served as a pilot in the U.S. Marine Corp for 5 years including duty in Vietnam. Tom worked for Hyster and Tektronix and had his own leasing and financing business. He flew in the U.S. Air Force Reserve for over 24 years in a Search and Rescue Unit located at Portland International Airport.

Tom Olson, Board Member

Tom was born in Illinois, and spent the first half of his professional career there. He began as a high school teacher. He then became Assistant Professor/Coordinator of Secondary Level Student Teaching at Illinois State University (the second largest program in the nation). Later, he was appointed Illinois Assistant State Superintendent for Planning and Development. The last half of his career was spent primarily in the Northwest as a senior executive in two different Regional Educational Laboratories. He finished his career as Executive Director of the nationally-acclaimed Western States Benchmarking Consortium, a group of seven large high performing school systems from six different Western states. He also served as President of the International Society of Educational Planners. Tom continues to work part time as a strategic planning consultant, and is an active local volunteer. Tom and his wife, Mariah , share 5 children, 12 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Nancy Sebastian, Board Member

Nancy has a background in education (taught middle and high school), business (real estate development and mortgage banking) and in the non-profit sector (focusing on first time homeownership). She earned a BA from the University of Detrot Mercy and certification to teach “English as a Second Language” from the University of California at Berkley. Nancy advocates for education through her association with Stand for Children and volunteering in Canby Schools. Nancy and her husband, Rex, moved to Canby in 2004. They have two children and two grandchildren.

Maureen Callahan, School District Liaison

Maureen has been in education for 25 years, which includes a wide range of experiences from teaching grades 3 through 8. She has had the great pleasure of working as a consultant to assist teachers around the country in learning for to teach mathematics. In the past 9 years, she has been in leadership as an instructional coordinator, assistant principal, principal, and currently the Director of Student Achievement.

Mary Walsh, Executive Director

Mary has lived in Canby for twelve years and has worked with the CEF since March, 2009. While raising her two daughters in West Linn, she was always involved in community including positions as Chair of the West Linn Friends of the Library, President of the West Linn Library Board, Secretary of the Board of The Christie School, and Chair of the Clackamas County Children Services Placement Review Board. Mary has a BA in Psychology and has worked as the City Recorder in West Linn and a victim assistant in the Clackamas County District Attorney’s Office. She is a member of the Canby Chapter of Stand for Children.
